ZeniMax Online Studios is looking for an experienced Lead Hard Surface Artist to work on a new AAA IP. The role involves partnering with Art/Design Directors and Leads to help drive our hard surface style and direction, managing and mentoring a talented team of 3D Artists (internal and external), and creating and maintaining benchmark examples and documentation to support hard surface asset production. The ideal candidate is an experienced and talented hard surface artist with extensive leadership experience. 


The preferred location for this role is Hunt Valley, MD, Austin, TX, or Madison, WI. Will consider remote.


  • Create benchmark assets by translating concepts ranging from simple sketches through polished illustrations into beautifully detailed models
  • Create realistic textures and materials provided by concept or your own imagination
  • Create and review hard surface deliverables to ensure they meet the quality expectations and technical requirements of the project
  • Work with other disciplines to ensure assets meet all expectations required by design, animation, fx, etc.
  • Accurately estimate tasks and maintain schedules and hard surface asset deliveries (internal and external)
  • Support the preparation of assignments for internal and external teams, and mentor internal Artists as required
  • Meet deadlines while maintaining high quality results


  • 5+ years of experience in a leadership position; autonomous problem-solving skills and strong initiative to meet hard surface art initiatives with a positive outlook
  • Proficiency with Sub-D modelling in 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, or equivalent 3D DCC software
  • Proficiency with texture creation in Substance Painter and Photoshop within PBR standards
  • Experience creating clean game ready topology, UVs and textures within real-time technical constraints
  • Ability to stay organized and maintain a high level of attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to communicate ideas and work well within a team

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of mechanical function to increase realism for any asset
  • Ability to create both hand painted textures and textures from photo reference
  • Experience in real-time material creation (Unreal, Unity, Substance Designer, etc.)
  • Experience in high detail sculpting with Zbrush
  • Solid understanding of form, silhouette, and shape language
  • Experience developing AAA projects
